IRVINE, CA (AttorneyNewswire.com) — August 15, 2010 — Oregon, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and South Carolina are five states that are on track to receive federal assistance in the form of $600 million to help
struggling homeowners. The Obama administration approved the distribution of funds and will be applied towards various housing and mortgage programs within each receiving state. It is up to each state to determine how they will spend their portion of the assistance money.
Timothy McFarlin, a
foreclosure attorney in Irvine, CA, believes that this type of effort is a move in the right direction, but more must be done:
“When you hear a big number like $600 million, it sounds like a lot of money, but in reality, it’s just a drop in the bucket. For example, of the $600 million, Oregon will receive $88 million, which has only been estimated as enough to help about 6,000 homeowners. For the homeowners who will receive some of this assistance, then the news is great, but something still has to be done for the thousands upon thousands who continue to struggle every day.”
McFarlin supports government initiatives aimed at helping struggling borrowers, but admits that no process is free from flaws. He advises
borrowers across the country to retain the services of a trained foreclosure attorney who can guide the borrower through their battle to avoid foreclosure. The attorney can explain to their clients who qualify how they can get their piece of any federal or state assistance offered to borrowers.
